Dance Genie (5 – 8 year old girls)

Bellydance Discovery offers these beginner children’s bellydance classes to girls 5-8 years old. The focus will be teaching them basic technique and dance to help build their creativity and artistic side.  This class further helps to build the child’s self-esteem while providing a creative outlet for unused energy.

The class will be filled with life and enthusiasm, exuberance and colour! It is so lovely to channel this enthusiasm through bellydance and to see your girls dance with such energy and passion.

Our goals are to:

• Introduce bellydance movement and steps in a creative way
• Develop an appreciation of music
• Ignite the power and excitement of the imagination
• Remove inhibitions and social blocks
• Develop an appreciation of innate value and uniqueness of self

Poi is a dance prop originated from the Kiwis (New Zealand natives). Our Betty has been spinning poi for the last six years and we have not seen any other bellydancer in Singapore with her poi talent.

Betty has great concern for poi participants not to bruise themselves using normal poi that is available in the market, and therefore she has designed with Mehmet a pair of beginners’ poi that will be user-friendly and easy to operate.

Lai lai! Come with your friends and family on these two Saturdays – 16 and 23 February! BDD will be having showcases in Queenstown on the former date, and Jurong West on the latter date. Valentine’s Day is just two, three weeks away! Florists across the island will be busy, busy, busy as the days lead up to the day itself as lovers all over demand the bestest, the freshest and the reddest roses for their significant others (even the assonance resounds with romance for some strange reason!)

Whatever your plan will be on this most anticipated – other times most dreaded day – in February, be it spending some snuggly schmuggly time with your significant others, or with some girlfriends in the spirit of SAD (not the emotion, rather Single Awareness Day), or simply embracing your existence with a cup of hot cocoa in front of the television or chamomile tea in front of your office computer, we hope that you will be with the One Billion Rising Movement in spirit!

Yes, you read it right – be part of the movement that began early last year in hopes to end violence against women. As shocking as it sounds, this atrocity has not simmered down in the parts of the world where it exists even with the dawn of this new millennium where men and women are known to exercise equal rights in both the domestic and corporate spheres. This initiative seeks to raise awareness to this kind of violence that still exists unfortunately to this very day.

So, if you plan to dress up in that tight red bodice and take those killer heels out for a walk with your girlfriends come this Valentine’s Day in the spirit of female empowerment, remember, too, that not all women in the world get to do the same as you. So head down over to Clarke Quay on the evening of 13^th February where The Fountain is, and Rise Up with the rest in Singapore, as well as the rest of the world – better baby steps than none!

Do you remember what was for supper on the second Tuesday of the New Year? Not a single clue? It starts with the word art, and ends with -preneur. Yes, you remember it right!

Bellydance Discovery, together with our artistic director, Yuki, was featured on our favourite local art channel, OKTO, in an episode for Artrepreneur. Talk about starting the new year with a huge mdia surprise! Yuki tells us of her humble beginnings with Bellydance Discovery, and how over the last few years, forming fortified partnerships with other businesses have become crucial for sustenance in the global market.

The episode also featured one of B.D.D.’s biggest performative milestone to date like her theatre musical Emotionally Yours that was staged over three days at the Black Box of the National Library in September 2012. Having been featured in this episode, Yuki expresses her aspiration to develop even beyond her greatest ambitions for the company — to think beyond the boxy confinements of our local arts industry where authenticity is growing thinner with every second in this contemporary world.

We congratulate Yuki and Bellydance Discovery for having persevered this far and may the later years of this second decade reap more achievements for everyone!
